Black Gold

Black Gold (2005) follows Tadesse Meskela on a mission to save his 75,000 struggling Ethiopian coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As his farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans on the international market, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to find buyers willing to pay a fair price. Against the backdrop of Tadesse’s journey to London and Seattle, the more powerful sides of the international trading system begin to unfold. New York coffee traders, auction houses and the double dealings of trade ministers at the World Trade Organisation reveal the enormity of Tadesse’s task to find a long term solution for his farmers. You can purchase the DVD for $24.95

Chocolate Country

Chocolate Country (2007) In the isolated hill towns of the Dominican Republic, cacao farmers have been fighting a losing battle with the global economy for as long as anyone can remember. In the village of Loma Guacanejo, things are about to change. If the farmers here can win organic certification and leverage the benefits of Fair Trade, they just might manage to turn the system on its head. To pull it off will take the cooperation of an entire community. Featuring a stirring soundtrack by local folk musicians, and an inside look at chocolate production from seed to pod to bean to powder, this short documentary took the Grand Jury Prize for its category at the Seattle International Film Festival.

"Beautifully realized. A real work of art and conscious" -Matt Dentler, South by Southwest

Fair Trade: Every Purchase Matters

Every Purchase Matters

Fair Trade is buying quality products that improve lives and protect the environment. Your purchase of Fair Trade Certified goods helps ensure fair prices for farmers & workers. It also means that their products were grown and cultivated without forced child labor, GMOs or dangerous chemicals. Your everyday purchases can help farming families in 70 countries build strong communities, keep their kids in school and protect fragile ecosystems.

Fair Trade: Improving Lives

"Fair Trade is all about improving lives, but we don't do that through charity- there are no hand outs in the Fair Trade world." - Paul Rice, President and CEO of Fair Trade USA

Through Fair Trade certification farmers not only earn a higher price for their goods, they also receive an additional premium fund for community development projects. These funds are used for things like building schools, health care clinics and clean water wells, as well as for home loans, scholarships and transportation. Fair Trade empowers communities to take their futures into their own hands.

Fair Trade: Protecting the Environment

Fair Trade is not just about earning a higher price for the harvest, it's about learning techniques for sustainable agriculture that help protect the environment and make the world a better place for future generations. To become Fair Trade Certified, farms must adhere to a strict set of environmental standards, including but not limited to: no use of GMO's, minimal and safe use of chemicals, elimination of slash and burn techniques and responsible management of waste and water runoff. These standards not only ensure sustainable production practices and fight climate change, but also worker health and safety.

Additionally, while Fair Trade does not require organic certification, it does encourage organic conversion to further enhance environmental commitment.

Fair Trade: Quality Products

Fair Trade Certified products are some of the highest quality goods available on the market. Farming communities around the world are rapidly realizing that quality-not quantity- is directly related to profitability, leading many Fair Trade cooperatives to invest their premium funds in quality control initiatives. By strengthening their capacity to produce high quality goods, these farmers are gaining increased market access, strengthening their business capacity and in turn earning higher wages to support the well being of their families and communities.

Fair Trade: The Power of the Consumer

Fair Trade is a system that harnesses the power of the market to help alleviate poverty and generate significant global change; this is why the American consumer has so much power. By making small, simple changes to your everyday purchasing habits, such as choosing a cup of Fair Trade coffee or eating a Fair Trade banana, shoppers are able to vote with their dollar for a better world.

Grains of Change

Grains of Change (2006) is a journey through northeastern Thailand, where rice farmers are practicing Fair Trade, organic and sustainable agriculture - see how putting people at the center of trade benefits the farmers' families and communities, their way of life and their environment, as well as the health and well-being of consumers worldwide.

Outsourced

In order to generate awareness and celebrate the launch of our new Apparel and Linens program, Fair Trade USA held a “Fair Trade Fits” video contest open to all U.S. students. The contest challenged the best young producers, editors and directors to create a short video exposing the injustices of the textile industry and the solution that Fair Trade USA’s certification program provides. The videos from the five finalists were posted on the Fair Trade Certified Facebook page, and users had one week to cast a vote for their favorite. The winner: Theo Schear, a student a the University of Michigan. His video “Outsourced” focuses on unfair labor practices in foreign countries due to outsourcing, and the importance of Fair Trade Certification in the apparel industry.

Uncommon Heroes

In 2005, Paul Rice, TransFair USA President and CEO, was recognized with the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. The financial support that came with the award and subsequent grants gave us critical funding to scale up operations and increase impact. Since receiving the Skoll award, we have more than doubled the additional income earned by farmers and farm workers from the U.S. Fair Trade market and introduced six new product categories. Thanks to Jeff Skoll, Founder and Chairman, and Sally Osberg, President and CEO of the Skoll Foundation, and their staff, the Skoll Foundation family is encouraged to connect and collaborate. The Skoll World Forum held annually at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford provides plenty of opportunities for idea exchange and networking. This April, in the historic Sheldonian Theatre, a short film in the Forums Uncommon Heroes series was premiered highlighting the work of Fair Trade, TransFair USA and Skoll winner Paul Rice. Were pleased to share it with you!
